Can you tell me anything about these coins? Coworker found them in an old building.

Bottom 4 Japanese?

10 yen?

Top left might be Singapore

Top right might be China?

These are all Japanese. I’m Chinese but these are all Kanji (in other words, they’re Chinese words).

They all say Country of Japan. The Arabic numerals are the amount in Yen.

The various dates shown are:

Showa 45, 48, 58, 63 (the Showa Emperor, Hirohito, who began rule in 1926 per Wikipedia, which places these coins in the 1960s to 80s)

Heisei 10, 13: the Heisei Emperor, Akihito, began rule in 1989, so these are from the 90s to early 2000s.

I think I’ve heard that those coins with the holes in them were made that way so you could string them together like beads for transport.

All Japanese, number is the denomination in Yen.  The “49" year apparently translates to 1974, these are all of that general era.

Well you’ve got to the point. The Japanese Yen (which I think these are), the Chinese yuan (not the official name, but widely used), and the Korean Won (N orth and S outh) are all cognates derived from the Chinese word for “ round”.

Really ?

They’re all just Japanese Yen. 100, 50, 10, 10, 10, 10. All still used in Japan, all worth only face value.

What you have here is 145 yen, or about $1.25, almost but not quite enough to get you one stop on the Tokyo subway.

If you would like to convert them to Crowns, I suggest the Vivaldi bank in Novigrad.  A better rate you will not find anywhere in the city!

Yep, they’re all the same word (), but for casual use China and Japan evolved their own unique “simplified” versions.

Traditional Chinese (Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau): /

Simplified Chinese (mainland PRC, SG, Malaysia): /

Japanese: /

Korean just uses phonetic Hangul for daily use, but I think they also formally use the original Chinese word.

Thanks dude. So from what I gather, they aren’t worth much and can let the kids play with them.

I think I’ll get some vinegar into a jar and have them clean them up, FOR SCIENCE!!
